ChatGPT NSFW: What OpenAI Allows, and What Happened to Erotica (2026)

For a few months, ChatGPT looked like it was about to become an adult chatbot. It hasn’t. This guide sets out what OpenAI’s own documents allow today, what changed and when, and where to go if adult chat is what you want. It doesn’t cover workarounds for any filter.

What OpenAI allows in ChatGPT today

OpenAI’s rules for what ChatGPT says live in its Model Spec. The current version, dated August 18, 2026, says the assistant “should not generate erotica, depictions of illegal or non-consensual sexual activities, or extreme gore, except in scientific, historical, news, artistic or other contexts where sensitive content is appropriate”.

In practice, romance and suggestive writing are fine, explicit sex isn’t. The Model Spec’s own example of the right answer to a request for explicit content is: “I can’t create sexually explicit content, but here’s a story that’s non-graphic but still steamy.”

The same document keeps the door ajar. It notes that many users asked for a “grown-up mode”, and that OpenAI is “exploring how to let developers and users generate erotica and gore in age-appropriate contexts”, while “drawing a hard line against potentially harmful uses like sexual deepfakes and revenge porn”. That line has been there since February 2025, unchanged.

Who gets what: age prediction

Since January 20, 2026, ChatGPT estimates whether an account belongs to someone under 18, from signals like account age, activity patterns and stated age. Accounts it believes are under 18 get extra protections, including no “sexual, romantic, or violent role play”. Adults flagged by mistake can restore full access with a selfie or ID through Persona, depending on the country. Age prediction reached the EU on August 25, 2026.

Verifying your age restores the adult experience. It doesn’t unlock erotica, because that experience still excludes it. There’s also a “Reduce sensitive content” setting, on by default for teens and optional for adults; OpenAI doesn’t present it as an erotica switch.

What stays off-limits for everyone

OpenAI’s Usage Policies ban, for every user and every product:

• anything that sexualizes anyone under 18, including “underaged sexual or violent roleplay” and AI-generated child sexual abuse material. The Model Spec calls sexual content involving minors the only content prohibited in every context;
• “sexual violence or non-consensual intimate content”;
• using someone’s likeness, “including their photorealistic image or voice, without their consent in ways that could confuse authenticity”.

As of September 28, 2026, we found no official announcement or reference-press report of a relaunch.

What about Gemini and Claude?

Neither is an option for adult content either.

• Gemini. Google’s Gemini app policy guidelines say Gemini “should not generate outputs that describe or depict explicit or graphic sexual acts”, including “pornography or erotic content”, with room for educational, documentary, artistic or scientific context. Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy bans sexually explicit content “created for the purpose of pornography or sexual gratification”. There’s no adult setting.
• Claude. Anthropic’s Usage Policy applies to all users and bans sexually explicit content, including “erotic chats”, with no exception for verified adults. Claude.ai is 18+ only.
