Grok Spicy Mode and NSFW: What xAI Actually Allows (2026)
Quick answer
Spicy Mode is the adult option of Grok Imagine, xAI's image and video generator, launched in August 2025. xAI doesn't describe it on its own pages: what it does document is an “Allow NSFW Content (I'm 18+)” setting for media, and a policy that bans sexual depictions of real people and anything involving children. If you want adult images, video or companions with published rules and prices, apps built for adult content are the steadier option.
Grok is the most permissive of the big mainstream AI assistants on paper, and its Spicy Mode is why. But most of what circulates about it comes from forums and third-party sites, not from xAI. This guide sticks to what xAI’s own pages say, dates the changes with reference press, and leaves workarounds out entirely.
What Spicy Mode is, and what xAI actually documents
Spicy Mode arrived with Grok Imagine, xAI’s image and video generator, in August 2025. TechCrunch reported at launch that it could generate sexually explicit content, including partial female nudity. That’s the press account; xAI itself doesn’t name or describe Spicy Mode anywhere on x.ai, its docs, its help pages or grok.com. The closest official wording is the SuperGrok Imagine sales page: “Fast. Unfiltered. Creative.”
What xAI does document is a setting. Grok’s Content Settings include “Allow NSFW Content (I’m 18+)”, described as displaying “media that may contain NSFW content”, with the condition that “you must be 18 years or older to enable this setting”. It’s a self-declaration, not a check.
For text chat, there’s no separate NSFW switch. xAI’s Terms of Service only say that if users “choose certain features or input suggestive or coarse language”, Grok “may respond with some dialogue that may involve coarse language, crude humor, sexual situations, or violence”.
Who can use it
- Plans. xAI doesn’t say which plans include Spicy Mode. At launch, TechCrunch reported it for SuperGrok and Premium+ subscribers on iOS. Grok’s plans page lists Imagine for every tier, without mentioning adult content.
- Age. Grok’s general minimum age is 13, with a parent’s permission under 18. The NSFW setting requires you to be 18, by your own declaration.
- Countries. Australia is the only country where xAI documents age assurance: until xAI can determine that a user is 18 or over, “they may not be able to access 18+ adult content”. Since January 2026, xAI also geoblocks, “in jurisdictions where such content is illegal”, the ability to generate images of real people in bikinis, underwear and similar attire. It doesn’t list which countries.
- Image generation on X. Since January 2026, creating and editing images through the @Grok account on X is limited to paid subscribers worldwide.
What xAI’s rules allow, and what they ban
xAI’s Acceptable Use Policy doesn’t ban consensual adult sexual content in general. It does ban, explicitly:
- “Undressing or nudifying real persons, or otherwise altering a real person’s image or likeness to depict them in an intimate or sexual context”;
- “Depicting likenesses of persons in a pornographic manner” and “deceptively impersonating a real person”;
- “Sexualizing or exploiting children”. xAI says it reports suspected child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children;
- content that’s illegal where you are.
For users in Australia, xAI’s terms add material depicting “abhorrent or offensive fetish or fantasy practices, for example, incest”. In practice, anything involving a real person is where the line sits, and it has moved several times.

What about Ani and Grok’s companions?
Grok’s companions, including the character Ani, launched in July 2025 for SuperGrok subscribers, according to TechCrunch. xAI’s only official statement about them is one line in its Grok FAQ: “Companions are available on the iOS app only, and there are no plans to bring them to the web or Android.” Which plans include them, and whether any adult mode exists, isn’t documented.

Alternatives built for adult content
Grok is a general assistant with an adult option whose rules keep moving. The apps below were built for adult content from the start, publish their rules, and ban the same things Grok does: real people and anything involving minors.
Promptchan AI — for adult images
A dedicated NSFW image generator with a SFW/NSFW toggle, 15+ styles including several anime ones, and daily free Gems. Its terms ban characters presented as minors and any depiction of celebrities or private individuals without consent. See our Promptchan review.
OurDream AI — for images and video
OurDream generates images and videos of your character, up to 60 seconds, at published DreamCoin costs. Its acceptable use policy permits “sexual and romantic content between consenting adult characters” for age-confirmed users, and it doesn’t allow photo uploads, citing possible deepfakes. Questions, answered
What is Grok Spicy Mode?
It's the adult option of Grok Imagine, xAI's image and video generator, launched in August 2025. At launch, TechCrunch reported it could generate sexually explicit content, including partial female nudity. xAI itself doesn't describe Spicy Mode on its official pages; its sales page for SuperGrok Imagine only says “Fast. Unfiltered. Creative.”
How do you enable NSFW on Grok?
The only official control is in Grok's Content Settings: “Allow NSFW Content (I'm 18+)”, which displays media that may contain NSFW content and requires you to be 18 or older. It doesn't lift xAI's rules: sexual depictions of real people and anything involving children stay banned. We don't cover workarounds.
Is Grok Spicy Mode still available?
xAI hasn't announced its removal, and it hasn't documented the feature either, so there's no official status to check. What's documented is a series of restrictions since January 2026, mostly around images of real people, and an “improved mature-content gate” in Grok Imagine in April 2026.
Can Grok make NSFW images of real people?
No. xAI's Acceptable Use Policy bans undressing or nudifying real persons, altering a real person's image to depict them in an intimate or sexual context, and depicting anyone's likeness in a pornographic manner. Since January 2026, the @Grok account on X also can't edit images of real people in revealing clothing.
Can Grok's companions like Ani do NSFW chat?
xAI doesn't say. Its only official statement is that companions are available on the iOS app only, with no plans for web or Android. Which plans include them, and whether any adult mode exists, isn't documented.
