Character AI Alternatives: What Actually Changed, and Where to Go Instead

If you’ve come back to Character AI recently and found it worse, you’re not imagining it. But the diagnosis most people reach for, they cranked the filter to maximum, is mostly wrong, and it sends them looking for the wrong fix.

Plenty of people blame the filter for all three. It’s worth a minute to check which row is yours.

The filter: what it does, and why nothing you do reaches it

Character AI says content filtering happens at the platform level, and that it isn’t a dial you can turn. That’s why the workarounds passed around on Reddit and Discord don’t get you an unfiltered platform.

Filter-remover APKs, Unicode tricks and jailbreak copypasta all run on your side of the connection. The filtering Character AI describes happens on its side. Its help center also says plainly that asking for the NSFW filter to be removed can get you banned.

Age verification doesn’t change that. It sorts accounts into the adult experience or the under-18 one, where open-ended chat is no longer available at all. Verified adults keep full chat, but Character AI’s Community Guidelines still prohibit pornographic content and nudity. The filter is the policy, not a setting.

If you want uncensored adult roleplay, you are not going to get it by fighting a system built to stop you. That’s not defeatism, it’s arithmetic.

The model: the change nobody diagnoses correctly

This is the one people get wrong most often.

In April 2026, Character AI announced PipSqueak 2, a new model replacing its previous default. c.ai+ members got it first; free users from early May. Today the free plan’s chat styles are PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, and the company says it will retire its legacy chat styles over time. Character AI says users in its testing consistently preferred the new model. Whether you do is a matter of taste, and if you built a favourite bot around the old one, it can feel like a different character.

You don’t need to pick a side to use the distinction. Here’s the tell:

• Your reply gets blocked or cut short → moderation.
• Your reply arrives but feels lobotomised → the model.

No filter workaround fixes the second one. The Legacy Menu buys you time while it lasts, but Character AI has said those styles are on their way out. If this is your complaint, no amount of prompt engineering is coming to save you, and the alternatives below are the only lasting answer.

The squeeze: ads, caps, and a currency

Free users now see full-screen ads between actions. Character AI acknowledged unskippable ads in December 2025, and in April 2026 said it had added usage limits on some features and more ad placements for free users. Charms, an in-app currency launched in December 2025, buy extra image generations, skip slow mode and bypass ads. c.ai+ at $9.99/month removes the feature limits; a cheaper c.ai lite plan arrived in September 2026 but keeps both limits and ads.

A word on the numbers you’ll see quoted. Many articles on this topic state a precise daily cap for swipes or messages, and they don’t agree with each other.

Character AI doesn’t publish these limits. Its own plan comparison simply says “Limited” for the free plan, with no number attached, and users discover the ceiling by hitting it. Any site quoting you an exact figure is quoting a community estimate with a confident face on it.

We’re not going to add another fake number to that pile. What’s verifiable is the structure: some features are limited on the free plan, there’s a currency in the middle, and the paid plan is what lifts the limits.

The four we’d actually move to

The scores below are the ones in our full review of each platform. Prices and policies come from each company’s own pages, and every one of these apps has real drawbacks, which we’ve listed. Where something depends on our own testing and we haven’t confirmed it yet, we leave it out rather than guess.

All four generate original fictional characters. None of them produce content depicting real people.

Candy AI — the closest thing to a full replacement

Our highest-rated companion app (4.6/5), with the broadest set of features here: chat, images, voice, image-to-video and Live Action. Text chat is unlimited on paid plans; the free version stops at 5 messages. Candy says its V2 characters bring better image quality, realism and consistency, and Live Action adds an interactive video mode with a selection of its own characters.

Where it hurts: the subscription isn’t the whole bill. Images, video, voice messages and calls spend tokens, which Candy values at about $0.10 each, and plan prices only appear after you sign in. Candy itself warns that exact details like hair colour or clothing can be hard to keep consistent, and detailed memory is tied to each chat, so resetting or deleting a conversation clears it. It’s a browser app: no App Store, no Play Store, no confirmed end-to-end encryption.

Move here if: moderation was your problem and you want the fullest feature set. Budget for tokens on top of the plan.

OurDream AI — the best value, with prices on the table

Prices are published upfront: $19.99 a month, or $119.88 a year. OurDream advertises a four-layer memory system that tracks your preferences and history across sessions, which is exactly what you want if the model change left your characters forgetful. Chat, images, video, voice and memory all come with one subscription, with DreamCoins paying for the visuals.

Where it hurts: your chats may be used to train OurDream’s AI models, which its privacy policy allows, alongside third-party analytics and ads. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit, though not end to end, and Candy’s privacy policy allows training on chats too, so this isn’t unique to OurDream. Then there’s the DreamCoins tax: you pay the subscription and still ration coins for images and video. It lists 19 voices, and voice calls cost 50 DreamCoins a minute. OurDream says a long video can take a few minutes to render, and a generation that times out is cancelled and refunded.

Move here if: you want to see prices before you pay and value matters most. If keeping your chats out of AI training is the priority, neither OurDream nor Candy AI rules it out, so read each review’s privacy section first.

Promptchan — story mode, with pictures in the scene

If what you miss is long-form narrative, Promptchan’s story mode is worth a look: it turns the conversation into a scene you direct, one chapter at a time, and you can switch back to ordinary chat whenever you like. Images can be generated inside the conversation, and a daily allowance of free Gems lets you try it without a card. It’s also the only app in this guide whose safety check raised no warning.

Where it hurts: Promptchan is an image tool first, with chat on the side. How much a character remembers from one session to the next is something we haven’t confirmed yet, and custom characters are a Pro feature. Past the free allowance you pay twice: a subscription, then Gems for images, voice messages (1 Gem) and calls (2 Gems).

Move here if: you’re a storyteller, not a chatter, and you want to direct the scene yourself.

DreamGF AI — the cheapest way out, for the first year

A builder that goes well beyond picking a face: DreamGF documents appearance (hair, body type, nationality), personality types and interests, and custom characters with their own traits, scenario and background. Pricing is aggressive for the first year: $69.99 on the annual plan, about $5.83 a month. DreamGF says your bank statement carries no adult wording.

Where it hurts: tokens pay for the extras, at 10 per image, 3 per voice message and 7 per minute of voice call, with 100 included each month, so heavier use means buying more. And the entry price doesn’t last: the plan renews at $25.99/month.

Move here if: first-year budget is the constraint, or you want to build a character from scratch rather than pick one off a shelf.

What you give up by leaving

Nobody writing these lists says this part, so we will.

Character AI’s library is enormous: by its own count, hundreds of millions of user-created characters, and a creator community none of these four come close to matching. If you’re there for the breadth of characters other people have built rather than for adult content, leaving is a downgrade, and no alternative on this page fixes that.

Every platform above meters something. Images, voice, video, credits. “Uncensored” and “unlimited” are different words, and the marketing on all four of these sites works hard to blur them.

And be honest with yourself about which problem you have. If your bots feel bland, switching platforms fixes it. If you were fighting the filter, switching fixes it. If you just miss the model you had before PipSqueak 2, nothing on this page brings it back, and Character AI says it won’t either.
