Character AI Alternatives: What Actually Changed, and Where to Go Instead

If you’ve come back to Character AI recently and found it worse, you’re not imagining it. But the diagnosis most people reach for — they cranked the filter to maximum — is mostly wrong, and it sends them looking for the wrong fix.

Three separate things degraded across the first half of 2026. Only one of them is the filter. Sort out which one broke your experience, because the answer changes what you should do about it.

Most people who search for alternatives have the first or third problem. A surprising number have the second and blame the filter for it.

The filter: what it does, and why nothing you do reaches it

Character AI’s moderation runs server-side. That single fact explains why every workaround circulating on Reddit and Discord fails.

Filter-remover APKs don’t work. Unicode tricks don’t work. Jailbreak copypasta doesn’t work. None of it touches the moderation layer, because that layer isn’t running on your device — it’s reading the model’s output on Character AI’s infrastructure before a single token reaches your screen.

There’s a nastier detail. Hammering the filter appears to raise a hidden friction score tied to your account. The more you probe it, the more suspicious the system becomes of your conversations, and the more readily it intervenes. Stress-testing the filter makes your own experience worse.

Age verification changed things, but less than the rumours suggest. Adults who pass verification get a less strict version of moderation. They do not get an unfiltered platform. Explicit content is still against the content policy, and the filter is still there. The strictness dial moved. The dial still exists.

If you want genuinely uncensored adult roleplay, you are not going to get it by fighting a system engineered to stop you. That’s not defeatism — it’s arithmetic.

The model: the change nobody diagnoses correctly

This is the one people get wrong most often.

In late April 2026, Character AI retired its legacy models — the ones long-time users had built their favourite bots around. By early May, every free user was on PipSqueak 2. The company’s position is that the new model is sharper and that testers preferred it. The community’s position, loudly, is that characters became near-mute, ignore established plot, and produce run-on nonsense.

You don’t need to pick a side to use the distinction. Here’s the tell:

• Your reply gets deleted as it generates → moderation.
• Your reply arrives but feels lobotomised → the model.

No filter workaround fixes the second one. Nothing you type changes which model is serving you. If this is your complaint, no amount of prompt engineering is coming to save you, and the alternatives below are the only real answer.

The squeeze: ads, caps, and a currency

Mid-chat full-screen ads began appearing for a subset of users in late 2025 and rolled out more widely through early 2026. In March 2026, Character AI began metering swipes (regenerating a reply), go-ons (asking the bot to continue), and memos. Hit a cap and you’re pushed toward Charms, an in-app currency, or toward c.ai+ at $9.99/month.

A word on the numbers you’ll see quoted. Nearly every article on this topic states a precise daily cap. They don’t agree with each other — published figures for the swipe limit alone range from around ten per day to several hundred, and reported message thresholds vary just as widely. Some sources contradict themselves across different articles.

The reason is simple: Character AI doesn’t publish these limits. The caps appear to vary by account type, rollout wave, and server load, and users discover them by hitting a wall with no warning. Any site quoting you an exact number is quoting a community estimate with a confident face on it, including the ones that sound authoritative.

We’re not going to add another fake number to that pile. What’s verifiable is the structure: your swipes are metered, your continuations are metered, there’s a currency in the middle, and you find out where the ceiling is by hitting it.

The four we’d actually move to

We’ve tested these ourselves. Every score below comes from our own hands-on reviews, not from a vendor’s marketing page — and every one of them has real drawbacks, which we’ve listed.

All four generate original fictional characters. None of them produce content depicting real people.

Candy AI — the closest thing to a full replacement

The most complete platform we tested, and the one that handles uncensored adult chat most reliably. Text chat is unlimited on every plan, including free — you get around a hundred messages to try it before committing to anything. The V2 image engine keeps a character’s face consistent from one image to the next, which almost nothing else manages, and Live Action video clips have no real rival in this category.

Where it hurts: the sticker price is not the real price. Once tokens are covering images, voice, and video, actual monthly spend climbs steeply. Outfit and scene accuracy on specific requests landed around fifty percent in our testing. The voice still sounds robotic, and memory drifts on very long conversations. It’s a browser app — no App Store, no Play Store, no confirmed end-to-end encryption.

Move here if: moderation was your problem and you want the fullest feature set. Budget more than the headline number.

OurDream AI — the best free tier, with a real privacy caveat

The strongest free tier of the four by some distance: fifty messages a day plus basic image credits, which is genuinely enough to evaluate the platform rather than tease you. Cross-session memory was among the best we tested — if PipSqueak 2’s forgetfulness is what drove you out, this is the direct answer. It’s also the only one bundling chat, images, video, voice, and memory without juggling separate subscriptions.

Where it hurts: privacy is a real red flag, not a nitpick. Chats are collected, there’s no encryption, and the data policies are vague. Then there’s the DreamCoins tax — you pay the subscription and still ration coins for images and video. Voice is flat text-to-speech across nineteen options with no emotional variation. Video failed roughly thirty-seven percent of the time in our testing.

Move here if: you want the best value and the best memory, and you’re clear-eyed about what you’re handing over. If privacy matters to you, look at Candy AI instead.

Lovescape — closest to what long-form roleplayers lost

If what broke for you was narrative — bots that used to hold an arc and now can’t — this is the one to look at. The relationship evolves in stages, memory adapts, and Story Mode V4 builds structured narrative roleplay with actual tension. The Spicy toggle is refreshingly honest about where the line sits: free stays SFW, premium unlocks NSFW, and nothing surprises you mid-scene with a moderation slap. Billing is genuinely discreet.

Where it hurts: NSFW mode burns credits fast, and most of what’s good sits behind the paywall. Six voices, all slightly robotic. No live calls, no live video. Roleplay can run over the top and reach intimacy faster than the story earned.

The deepest character customisation of the four: looks, personality, and a backstory that genuinely shapes how conversations go. Raw image quality is excellent. Pricing is aggressive, starting around $5.99/month on the annual plan. Signup is anonymous and chats are encrypted — the strongest privacy posture of the four.

Where it hurts: faces drift between images of the same character, where Candy AI holds steady. The voice is synthetic. Long-term memory fades on older sessions. Almost everything worth having sits behind the paywall, and premium tiers plus token extras push the real cost well past the entry price.

Move here if: budget is the constraint, or you want to build a character from scratch rather than pick one off a shelf.

What you give up by leaving

Nobody writing these lists says this part, so we will.

Character AI’s library is enormous — millions of user-created bots, and a creator community none of these four come close to matching. If you’re there for the breadth of characters other people have built rather than for adult content, leaving is a downgrade, and no alternative on this page fixes that.

Every platform above meters something. Images, voice, video, credits. “Uncensored” and “unlimited” are different words, and the marketing on all four of these sites works hard to blur them.

And be honest with yourself about which problem you have. If your bots feel bland, switching platforms fixes it. If you were fighting the filter, switching fixes it. If you just miss the model you had two months ago — nothing on this page brings it back, and neither will Character AI.
